Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on 24 August 1972. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise encouraged her passion for art and creativity. Aunt Denise, who worked night shifts as a nurse, allowed her to study literature for art as well as theater in the daylight. DuVernay was captivated by the 1961 movie West Side Story after her aunt recommended it to DuVernay. DuVernay was taught by her that art can be a vehicle for activism. DuVernay's mother also had social consciousness and taught DuVernay how to convey messages through artwork. DuVernay resided in Compton throughout her youth, however she would spend every summer with the extended family of her father living in Lowndes County Alabama. Her father recalled the civil rights marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the Selma town that was nearby, Alabama. DuVernay used her summers in Alabama as inspiration for her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. Her career began working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being asked to check the trash at the home that belonged to a member of the jury. DuVernay was hired right after graduating from college as an assistant publicist in a small studio. In 1999, she founded her own firm of public relations called The DuVernay Agency. Her agency launched numerous lifestyle and promotion networks which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
